Workshop on Diagnostics, Imaging and Spectroscopy:
Potential for Biomedical and Industry Applications

A workshop entitled "Diagnostics, Imaging and Spectroscopy: Potential for Biomedical and Industry Applications” was held this Spring at CWRU. This was a joint effort among the National Center for Microgravity Research on Fluids and Combustion (NCMR), NASA Glenn Research Center, and the CWRU Biophotonics Group. Its objectives were: (1) to assess the regional capabilities for the development and application of diagnostic, imaging and spectroscopic techniques and to encourage more interaction among researchers from all institutions and (2) to explore how to transmit these capabilities to industry.

Presentations were made by researchers from CWRU, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, University Hospitals of Cleveland, NASA Glenn Research Center and the National Center for Microgravity Research on Fluid and Combustion. In addition to surveys of current diagnostic techniques and applications at NASA and the NCMR specific techniques were described that included confocal microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, ultrasound, atomic force microscopy, and molecular imaging.

There were 73 participants and poster presentations from local area institutions such as Cleveland State University, Keithley Instruments, and Northrup Grumman Corp., in addition to those indicated above, and were well received.
